Maritime Operations Centre (MOC)

The role of the Maritime Operations Centre is to continuously monitor internationally designated call and reply distress frequencies in both the HF and VHF bands for SOLAS (Safety Of Life At Sea) responsibilities.

For its size, New Zealand has the largest area of responsibility in the world. It stretches from the equator to the South Pole and from half way across the Tasman Sea to halfway towards South America. That equates to some 50-million square kilometres of ocean that makes up 12.5% of the earth’s total water surface.

This area, known as NAVAREA XIV, includes all of the coastal waters around New Zealand. In the provision of this service, the Maritime Operations Centre broadcast Maritime Safety Information including:

  • Meteorological information
  • Navigational warnings
  • Ionospheric prediction warnings
