Digital Selective Calling (DSC)
Digital Selective Calling was introduced as a service in 1999. DSC is a data-based alerting system similar to terrestrial paging. It uses structured messages to alert ships and coast stations of impending messages for them. And it indicates the level of priority, and the subsequent means and frequency requested for ongoing communication.
This technology means that aural watch-keeping on vessels is no longer required. Digital Selective Calling highlights the importance for non-SOLAS vessels to:
- Use Taupo Maritime Radio (ZLM) on a regular basis
- Test your radio daily to ensure it is working (e.g. send an updated position report)
- Become familiar with your equipment so you can make contact quickly and efficiently in the case of an emergency
